GM recalls Bolt EV again after fire risk

GM announced a second Bolt EV recall for 2017 through 2019 over potential fire issues. The SLOTXO company says it plans to replace defective batteries. But until it can, it advises Bolt customers to limit charging to a maximum of 90

percent and to no less than 70 miles. It also reiterated last week's advice not to park in the shade and let the car charge overnight unattended. The latest recall follows a similar recall last November, when GM recalled more than 68,000 bolts.

The company also recommends that Bolt customers visit their nearest Chevy EV dealer for advanced diagnostic software. This should give early warning of future battery problems.

Hyundai, which supplies batteries from LG Chem like GM, has replaced more than 75,000 batteries for the Kona EV.While it may sound shocking GM's recall stems from five Bolt firings between 2017 and 2019 —

it's worth noting that petrol cars typically cause about 150 fires a day, according to FEMA. However, EV manufacturers need to prove that. They can responsibly deal with potential issues before they hurt more people.
